The Northern Illinois Area Health Education Center (NIAHEC) is located on the campus of the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford, Illinois. Northern Illinois Area Health Education Center (NIAHEC)

The NIAHEC has been operating in Northern Illinois for over three years. During this time, the Center has implemented a series of activities that are designed to help remedy the problem of primary care provider maldistribution and improve the quality of health care in rural, underserved communities. The activities offer an integrated approach to the problem and challenge of health professional retention in rural, underserved areas. The activities are guided by three major programmatic objectives:

  • Identify and recruit young people from underserved areas for health careers
  • Develop practice opportunities and support for placement of health professionals in rural, underserved communities
  • Develop and implement methods for retention of health professionals in rural areas

Achievement of these objectives are facilitated through NIAHEC program initiatives and products as described below:

Health Career Initiatives

Health career initiatives are designed to provide an additional level of support in the area of recruitment at the middle school, high school and college levels. Initiatives include Health Careers Camps, annual Health Career Summits, targeted recruitment activities among the health professions disciplines and student oriented 'transdisciplinary' immersion experiences in a variety of rural health care settings. Community Profiles

A range of profiles that describe rural communities and the employment opportunities that are available to health professionals have been developed and disseminated. In addition, profiles of specific health care organizations such as hospitals are also available for the purpose of providing background information on a community to prospective health professionals who are looking for new employment opportunities. Community Network Initiatives

The retention of practicing health professionals in rural communities is often difficult due to such factors as geographic isolation and lack of collegial support brought about of the maldistribution of providers.
