Who are we looking for?
The RMED Program is specifically designed to give students with an interest in Illinois rural primary care the tools, skills and knowledge needed to be successful practitioners. It was created to help facilitate physicians to return to rural Illinois. Illinois’ rural communities have been challenged with a severe shortage of primary care practitioners, and this program was established to address the physician shortage. We are looking for students who have strong experience/backgrounds with rural communities, students who are academically strong, and students who have exhibited leadership and community involvement. Most importantly, the student must be dedicated to primary care practice in rural Illinois.

What are the admissions criteria?
RMED is a program within the University of Illinois College of Medicine. All students will take the regular medical curriculum, in addition to the supplemental RMED curriculum. Thus, a strong academic career is a necessity; a firm science and math foundation is essential for success in medical school. All students should consult their premedical advisor for the most current GPA and MCAT score criteria for medical schools.

Additionally, an applicant to the RMED Program should be have experience in rural communities, and a firm history of community involvement and leadership experience.

How do I apply?
The Rural Medical Education Program is supplemental to the regular medical school curriculum. To apply to the RMED program, students must:

The deadline for RMED applications is December 1st of the year prior to enrollment.

Once a student’s RMED application is complete, all RMED applicants are screened by RMED faculty. Those selected for interviews will be notified. Interviews are typically held during the third week of January, and are at the Rockford campus. Those who are chosen for the RMED program are notified following formal acceptance by the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
