In May
2000, the Illinois Board of Higher Education approved the proposal by CRHP interdisciplinary partners include dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health and social work. The Center is located on the campus of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford. It is directed by the assistant dean for Rural Health Professions and administered through an advisory committee comprised of representatives of the partner disciplines, the regional medical school dean, rural recruitment and retention specialists, the director of University Outreach and Public Service. Also represented are members of the rural health care sector, including a hospital administrator, the director of the Center for Rural Health of the Illinois Department of Public Health and a representative from the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) network. The Center was granted National Center status by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees on November 13, 2003 and is now known as the National Center for Rural Health Professisons (NCRHP). The Center was designed by taking an “evidence-based” approach – looking at and talking with directors of other centers in the United States to determine the optimal configuration of a rural-focused, interdisciplinary program. Unique to the center is its joint emphasis on community-based education and interdisciplinary clinical training. A planning retreat was held to provide a broad base of input from representatives of other UIC academic and administrative units. The result is a Center with the major divisions of:
